The Course of MS
The course of MS is unpredictable, and varies from person to person. Despite this, several types of MS have been identified:
- Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) Most people experience periods of attacks followed by periods when symptoms subside. This may continue over many years with gradual increases in disability.
- Secondary-progressive MS (SPMS) Many people who have RRMS eventually develop SPMS. Over time, relapses become less frequent, but symptoms and disability continue to worsen.
- Primary-progressive MS (PPMS) This form of MS is rare. With this type of MS, people do not experience relapses and remissions. Their symptoms steadily worsen, from initial onset of the disease.
