Medical experts have called for better coordination of cancer care across Europe.
A team from Slovenia has called for a European cancer taskforce to be set up to oversee the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care for the disease.
In its report, the group called for cancer to be made a priority across Europe's 27 member states, particularly in light of rates at which the disease is predicted to grow over the next decade.
Figures show that numbers of cases of cancer could increase by 20 per cent by 2020, based on 2002 statistics.
While the report's authors agree that a rise in cancer cases was expected to be linked to an ageing population, it claims that one third of cases could be prevented by a change in lifestyle including healthier diet and more exercise.
The report entitled Responding to the Challenge of Cancer in Europe, will be discussed at a two-day conference on Thursday and Friday, where medical experts are expected to press for the EU to adopt a policy on the issue.
It is estimated that there were 3.2 million new cases of the disease across Europe in 2006.
