A $10 million injection of funding to help treat psoriasis has been welcomed by a US campaign group.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) delivered the money to fund research into the condition last year, the second consecutive year that funding into the condition has increased.
Psoriasis research has traditionally been underfunded compared to other diseases receiving between $5 and $6 million annually.
However, the Psoriasis Cure Now organisation has praised the NIH for increasing its focus on the disease.
"Psoriasis Cure Now was founded in 2005 because it was disturbing to see psoriasis research funding not even keep pace with inflation as research on other diseases more than doubled," Michael Paranzino, president of the group, said.
"We are thrilled to see Congress and NIH working to reverse this funding shortfall with the second significant funding increase in a row."
It is hoped annual psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis research funding in the US will increase to a target of $20 million by 2010.
