Warning signs of meningitis could soon be acted on more quickly by parents throughout Europe, thanks to the launch of a new tool designed by a nurse in the UK.
Spotmate, based on the traditional 'tumbler test', features a curved bar and a magnifying lens allowing worried parents to check their children for the rash commonly associated with the illness.
This rash normally disappears when pressure from a glass tumbler is applied to the skin, however if it remains it could indicate meningitis and requires prompt medical attention.
Specialist community nurse Janet Lawrence and her sister Ann-Marie Watson designed the product after her daughter displayed signs of meningitis.
Fortunately, Ms Lawrence's daughter was not suffering from the illness, however she hopes the device will now become a "crucial part of any first aid kit" and give reassurance to parents.
"It is a multi-purpose device and can be used by anyone, from health professionals to parents in a home environment," she explained.
The tool, which is backed by the charity Meningitis UK, is designed for people of all ages, including babies.
