A traditional Chinese herbal medicine could help to reduce the painful symptoms experienced by children with atopic eczema, research suggests.
The study carried out by the Chinese University of Hong Kong found that the herbal remedy, consisting of five herbs, reduced the need for conventional medicines.
Research on 85 children with atopic eczema, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, also found that their general quality of life improved as a result of the treatment.
Capsules given to the children contained a 'pentaherbs' formulation including Japanese honeysuckle, peppermint, peony tree root bark, underground stem of the atractylodes herb and amur cork-tree bark.
Children who took the herbal remedy reported that their quality of life had improved by one third, while children who took a dummy pill reported no improvement at all.
Use of topical steroids, conventionally prescribed for atopic eczema, was also reduced to an average of four days per month.
Although the findings may signal new hope for the treatment of atopic eczema symptoms, UK medical experts have warned against the use of Chinese medicines without first consulting a doctor.
