GERD dietary advice

19 Mar 2008

Sufferers of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) have been issued with some dietary advice on the types of foods to avoid in order to control acid reflux.

Red meat sometimes aggravates acid reflux, so nutritionists recommend eating white meat and fish, although this can vary from sufferer to sufferer.

Spicy and fatty foods including rich creamy sauces and pastries are also a common cause of acid production in many people.

Meanwhile, fruits and vegetables including citrus fruits, berries and under ripe fruit can also sometimes cause pain and discomfort

Caffeine should be limited as it can cause the valve at the top of the stomach to relax and can cause acid reflux.

The way in which we eat as well as the speed can also have an effect on acid reflux.

"Slow down, chew thoroughly and ideally give your body a good 45 minutes in an upright position after you've eaten," nutritionist Jane Clarke, writing in the Daily Mail, adds.

Acid reflux is caused when the lower oesophageal sphincter does not close properly, allowing acid to back up into the oesophagus.

The condition can be triggered by hiatus hernia, excess weight and also as a side effect of particular drugs.
