Taking a daily dose of cod liver oil could help to reduce the number of painkillers required to tackle rheumatoid arthritis pain, latest research suggests.
According to researchers at Dundee University, taking 10g of cod liver oil per day cuts the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, by 30 per cent.
The study, published in Rheumatology journal, looked at 97 patients over nine months, giving half of them high strength cod liver oil and the other half a dummy pill.
Scientists now believe the research could help rheumatoid arthritis sufferers to cut down on how many drugs they use to help their condition.
Some anti-inflammatory drugs are thought to cause side-effects such as high blood pressure as well as increasing heart attack risk.
It is believed that the positive effects were possibly due to the anti-inflammatory properties of the fatty acids the fish oil contains.
Study leader Professor Jill Belch said the study offers hope to many rheumatoid arthritis patients who are seeking to reduce the number of painkillers they take.
Although she stressed that any change in medication should be discussed with a doctor, she urged rheumatoid arthritis sufferers to try cod liver oil alongside their normal painkillers for 12 weeks.
