Psoriasis sufferers are at an increased risk of serious medical conditions including heart disease and cancer and need to manage their condition carefully, new information about psoriasis warns.
A report published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology states that people with the most severe cases of psoriasis have a higher risk of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, depression and obesity.
Medical experts have stressed the importance of psoriasis sufferers undergoing regular check-ups with doctors in order to minimise their chances of developing such illnesses.
Dermatologist Alexa Kimball who carried out the study on recently published research into psoriasis, advised sufferers to follow guidance from their doctors.
Lifestyle changes such as losing weight, exercising, stopping smoking, reducing high blood pressure, controlling cholesterol and managing diabetes as needed, can also help to reduce associated illnesses, she said.
According to a recent study published in the European Journal of Dermatology, some 14 million people in Europe suffer from psoriasis.
