Taking one daily insulin injection may be more effective at treating type 2 diabetes than treatments which require three separate doses, according to the latest research.
A study from the Lancet suggests that a single daily dose of insulin glargine proves just as effective as insulin lispro, which must be administered three times a day.
Professor Reinhard G Bretzel from the Justus-Liebig University in Germany found patients were able to control blood glucose with one daily dose of insulin glargine as efficiently as with insulin lispro.
The study of patients in 69 locations across Europe and Australia found similar reductions in haemoglobin A1c for participants in both test groups.
Those receiving insulin glargine recorded an average reduction of 1.7 per cent, down from 8.7 per cent to seven per cent, compared to those on insulin lispro who noted a 1.9 per cent decrease in haemoglobin levels.
"We conclude that insulin glargine provides a simple and effective option that is more satisfactory to patients than is lispro for early initiation of insulin therapy," the researchers said.
Insulin glargine has a "lower risk of hypoglycaemia, fewer injections, less blood glucose self-monitoring and greater patient satisfaction" than the alternative treatment, Professor Bretzel added.
