Claims that arthritis sufferers can do little to relieve the painful symptoms of their condition are a "myth", a charity says.
According to advice from the organisation Arthritis Care, arthritis sufferers can take a number of simple steps to alleviate arthritis pain and strengthen muscles.
A balanced diet combined with gentle exercise can help to help weight loss and therefore relieve pressure on joints, experts say.
Indeed, for each pound of bodyweight lost, among overweight and obese people with osteoarthritis of the knee, a four pound reduction in knee stress can result.
"Swimming, walking or cycling can strengthen the muscles, keep joints working, preserve or improve range of movement, assist mobility and increase fitness," a spokesperson for the group explained.
She added that exercise could also help with pain control, improve sleep, heighten energy levels, as well as reduce depression and isolation.
Statistics from Arthritis Care reveal there are around 200 different kinds of rheumatic diseases, with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis being the most prevalent.
