Health information advising people to drink water regularly may not actually have a significant impact on wellbeing, scientists say.
A study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology claims to have found little evidence to support guidelines for eight glasses of water per day as recommended by many health bodies.
Researchers reviewed existing clinical studies on the topic and found solid evidence that people in hot, dry climates as well as athletes showed an increased need for additional fluids.
However researchers claim to have found no study to support the recommendations that drinking eight glasses of water per day is beneficial to health.
They nevertheless admitted that no clear evidence exists of a lack of benefit either, stating that there was "simply a lack of evidence in general".
