Experts have claimed that diet could play a bigger role preventing viruses such as colds and flu than previously believed.
Scientists in Australia have said that while it can be comforting to eat fatty or carbohydrate-packed foods particularly when the weather is colder - this can leave immune systems more vulnerable.
According to the Dieticians Association of Australia, eating a large amount of fruit and vegetables allows the body to receive the right amount and mix of antioxidants to help boost the immune system.
Spokesman for the association Dr Trent Watson said: "Some studies have shown that carotenoids can help immune function, and the antioxidant allicin is said to have antiviral properties.
"But there is no silver bullet for a strong immune system. Eating a wide range of fruit and vegetables each day will give us the best mix of antioxidants, in the right amounts."
He added that eating breakfast was a critical part of taking steps to prevent flu and other illnesses as it helps to increase the amount of antioxidants your body receives in a day.
