The combination of busy lifestyles and everyday stresses and strains is having a detrimental affect on European's sleep, experts say.
Jessica Alexander, a spokesperson for The Sleep Council, commented: "We live in a society which is running on all cylinders 24 hours a day and we are all packing more into those 24 hours than we ever have
so it's not really surprising something is giving and one of those things is sleep quality, as are stress levels."
Stresses, long working hours, financial worries, muscle cramps and noisy neighbours or partners' snoring have all been named as core reasons for debilitating sleep deprivation in adults.
She warned: "It's actually quite significant in terms of its contribution to health and wellbeing, and, if you are not getting enough sleep, you are missing positive energy [and] it's going to have a major effect on both mental and psychical wellbeing."
Cutting down on stimulants such as caffeine, participation in physical activity and exercise and regular time keeping for sleeping patterns are all recommended for aiding more restful sleep.
