Arthritis pain can be helped by food

29 May 2008

Including certain foods in your daily diet can help ease pain caused by arthritis, experts suggest.

Dietician Lisa Dorfman told US TV network NBC that some foods can offer those who suffer from chronic joint and arthritis pain natural relief, reducing the need for some pain relief medication.

"One of the reasons why people feel the pain associated with arthritis is because of the inflammatory response," she explained.

"There are compounds in some foods that actually help to block the enzymes that bring on the inflammatory response."

According to Ms Dorfman, ingredients such as spinach, cherries, broccoli and green tea have been found to reduce the level of inflammation in our bodies.

The European Parliament recently announced a set of priorities that aim to improve quality of life for people suffering from arthritis across Europe.

As a result of the new initiative physicians will be able to attach more importance to rheumatic diseases, establish a recommendation for early diagnosis and treatment and develop a strategy for patients to have better access to information and treatment.
