A leading nutritionist has warned that digestive problems should not be ignored, as they can often be signs of more serious health problems.
Nutrition expert Fiona Hunter explained that people "tend to trivialise digestive problems", but asserted that common complaints can lead to serious conditions if left untreated.
Raising awareness yesterday as part of World Digestive Health Day run by the World Gastroenterology Association, Ms Hunter highlighted that leaving common ailments such as bloating and constipation could potentially lead to bowel cancer.
"There are changes we can make to our diet and lifestyle that will help reduce the risk of problems like bloating and other digestive problems," she said.
Eating a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and wholegrain cereals rich in fibre can help keep the digestive system working efficiently.
"You are less likely to suffer from problems like constipation, if you have a high fibre diet," she added.
Drinking water regularly throughout the day allows fibre to speed up transit times. Experts recommend drinking six to eight glasses each day for optimum health benefits.
