Eating greens promotes better eye health, experts say

03 Jun 2008

Few people know that eating greens could benefit eyesight more than a healthy serving of carrots, a growing body of evidence suggests.

Dark green leafy vegetables, including broccoli, purple sprouting greens and spinach contain health-promoting properties for good eyesight, according to experts.

Recent research indicates that foods including kale, spinach, green beans, broccoli and eggs can help reduce risk of common eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

To benefit from the eye health-boosting properties of leafy greens, nutritionists recommend the consumption of the equivalent to a mixing bowl of fresh spinach each day.

Consultant Ophthalmologist Mr Nick Lee said: "It is widely known that what we eat affects our body functions and green vegetables have long been considered valuable to maintaining eye sight.

"But what most people don't realise is that even with a healthy diet, the levels of nutrients needed to make a positive difference to eye sight are such that it would be almost impossible to maintain them."

He suggests that taking a lutein dietary supplement could benefit those who may find it difficult to consume such a large daily amount of greens.
