A new international trial has discovered a promising alternative treatment for patients living with multiple sclerosis (MS).
The study led by Italian expert professor Giancarlo Comi, from the University Vita-Salute in Milan, showed that a new pill could offer MS sufferers an alternative treatment to injected drugs.
Results showed that a daily dose of laquinimod reduced signs of MS inflammation by more than 40 per cent.
In contrast to existing methods of treating MS, the new medication can be taken orally rather than being injected, making it more convenient for patients.
Published in the Lancet Medical Journal, the report stated that the overall effectiveness and safety demonstrated by the trial, "in combination with the oral route for administration, make laquinimod a promising therapeutic opportunity for patients" with multiple sclerosis.
Researchers are now conducting further assessments of the benefits and risks of the new treatment on a larger scale.
