It has recently come to light that many women are unaware of the side effects associated with taking the contraceptive pill.
While taking the pill can cause minor side effects such as breast pain, mood swings, breakthrough bleeding and bloating, "there are more serious risks with taking hormones, particularly oestrogen", explains sexual health expert Dr Catherine Hood.
Women who experience symptoms of chest pain, breathlessness, severe headaches, migraines or changes to vision are advised to seek medical attention immediately.
Research conducted by Bayer Schering Pharma found that only 34 per cent of women in the UK and Ireland understand the impact of hormones in the pill they take every day.
While only 44 per cent of women admit to thinking about the hormones in their contraceptive pill, 80 per cent are more concerned about the fat and calories in their food.
Latest reports claim that the pill has become 'outdated' as an effective method of preventing pregnancy, with the government encouraging women to opt for more long-acting methods such as hormonal implants or intrauterine devices (IUDs).
