Eating an unhealthy diet during pregnancy could have long-term implications for the child's health, including risk of obesity, high cholesterol and blood sugar levels and type 2 diabetes, according to new research.
A report published in the Journal of Physiology found that a mother's diet during pregnancy affects the baby's metabolism, suggesting risk of long-term, irreversible health issues in adulthood.
Researcher Dr Stephanie Bayol explained: "It seems that a mother's diet whilst pregnant and breastfeeding is very important for the long term health of her child.
"We always say 'you are what you eat'. In fact, it may also be true that 'you are what your mother ate.' This does not mean that obesity and poor health is inevitable and it is important that we take care of ourselves and live a healthy lifestyle. But it does mean that mothers must eat responsibly whilst pregnant."
A previous study published in the British Medical Journal demonstrated a link between parental and child weight.
In light of the findings, experts advise pregnant women to maintain a balanced diet free from fatty, processed junk foods.
