People with a snoring problem are encouraged to visit their physician as it could be a sign of a more serious health issue, experts warn.
Dr Rami Kayhat from the Ohio State University's Sleep Disorders Clinic told US TV network NBC 4 that snoring is the most common problem patients discuss with their physician.
As well as causing tiredness, sleep disturbance and irritability, snoring could also be a symptom of sleep apnea.
"Not every snorer has sleep apnea, but a large percentage of snorers have sleep apnea. If it goes untreated, they'll have an increased risk of heart disease," Dr Kayhat told NBC 4.
"In a large percentage of patients, it's hard to tell. We suggest that anybody who has trouble snoring see a doctor or sleep physician."
According to statistics, men who are overweight are more at risk of suffering from sleep apnea than those of normal size.
Figures estimate that sleep apnea affects around four per cent of men and two per cent of women.
