People who smoke are less likely to recover from the flu virus than non smokers, a new study carried out on mice suggests.
Researchers at Yale University School of Medicine in the US found that viral infections such as influenza can have more serious consequences in patients exposed to cigarette smoke.
The study indicated that cigarette smoke combined with the flu virus can cause more severe damage to the airways, which could result in the development of lung diseases such as emphysema.
According to the report, published in Journal of Clinical Investigation, the findings "offer a new window of opportunity for a better understanding of the unique interaction between cigarette smoke and innate immune responses".
The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease states that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable and treatable illness predominantly caused by cigarette smoking.
Previous research has shown that flu can worsen symptoms of COPD, in particular increasing the frequency and severity of coughing and shortness of breath.
