Time out at work "vital", says International Stress Management Association

14 Aug 2008

The importance of taking a break at work has been reiterated by the International Stress Management Association (IMSA) today.

A spokesperson for the organisation makes her comments following the publication of new research by human resources firm Chiumento which found that only 16 per cent of employees regularly take a proper lunch break.

Such a break was defined as roughly an hour away from the desk at least three times per week.

The representative said: "Time out is vital to refresh the body and mind. If a lunch hour is not possible then short breaks regularly can be effective."

The ISMA representative suggested that deep abdominal breathing can be beneficial when people feel anxious, recommending a maximum of three such breaths once an hour, or when individuals feel under pressure.

She explains that this can help to clear people's thoughts and also reduce the flow of adrenaline which causes the wound up feeling in the body and mind.
