One of the largest and longest studies into hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in the world has revealed that the treatment can help to improve sleep, joint pain and sexuality in post-menopausal women.
A study, by the Women's International Study of Long Duration Oestrogen after Menopause (Wisdom) research team, and published by the British Medical Journal, has revealed that combined oestrogen and progestogen hormone replacement helped to improve the quality of life for women in the study.
"Our results show that hot flushes, night sweats, sleeplessness and joint pains were less common in women on HRT in this age group. Sexuality also improved," said Professor Alastair MacLennan from the research team.
He added that overall quality of life measures also improved, even for women who were not suffering from hot flushes and were "well past" the menopause.
Women between the ages of 50 and 69 took part in the study. Participants came from a number of different countries, including the UK and Australia.
However, there are a number of risks with prolonged use of HRT, including a higher chance of contracting womb, ovarian or breast cancer, among other things.
