A single session of exercise helps to reduce fat by-products inside muscles, which affects insulin resistance, a study has suggested.
Carried out by staff at the US institution the University of Michigan, the research involved five obese women performing three separate two-day trials.
In one, they ate a calorie-controlled diet, in the second they ate a diet which was 700 calories above normal and in the third they consumed the same high-calorie diet but exercised to the point where they expended the excess calories.
The scientists found that overeating reduced the rate of fatty acid in the muscles being burned off, while exercising increased it.
Andrea Cornford, a member of the research team, comments: "Exercise decreases everyone's insulin resistance and therefore reduces the chances of developing diseases such as Type 2 diabetes.
"This study shows that even a single bout of exercise helps obese individuals increase their body's fat-burning rate and improve their metabolic health."
