Those who are overweight face a higher risk of developing inflammatory activity that can lead to heart problems, it has been asserted.
New research has advised cardiovascular disease is more likely to occur in unfit subjects due to the higher level of white blood cells to be found in their system.
Published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the British Heart Foundation's (BHF) study reported that the results should indicate for people the "huge benefits" of being active as a means to protect the heart.
Commenting on the study, cardiac nurse June Davison said: "It is thought that inflammation is related to the development of cardiovascular disease - white blood cells play an important role in this inflammatory process."
The research looked at 452 men, comparing their white blood cell count with physical fitness. It was found that those with higher levels of body fat had a higher count - putting them at an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
Earlier this month, the BHF called for a tougher stance on the advertising of junk food during television programmes with a young audience.
