Researchers in the US have advised that neurological pain could be reduced with acupuncture.
Published in the Anaesthesia and Analgesia journal, the study looked at 4,000 chronic headache sufferers and found that 62 per cent of those that received the treatment reported relief.
This was compared to 45 per cent of people who were taking more traditional pain medications - which caused the specialists to conclude acupuncture could be more effective than drugs such as aspirin.
Dr Tong Joo Gan, who led the study at Duke University, North Carolina, USA, said that the treatment was becoming increasingly favourable for many types of pain.
"People experience significantly fewer side effects and it can be less expensive than other options," he added, stating that this "reinforces that acupuncture also is a successful source of relief from chronic headaches."
Duke University was established in 1924 and has a number of ongoing areas of research.
