Diabetes patients who ensure that they maintain low blood sugar levels are less likely to suffer from heart attacks and coronary heart disease.
This is according to researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, who discovered that people with diabetes who have low levels of blood glucose are 17 per cent less likely to suffer from a heart attack and 15 per cent less likely to experience coronary heart disease.
Study lead author Dr Kausik Ray said previous research on the topic has been "inconclusive", creating confusion for both doctors and their patients.
"Although additional research needs to be conducted, our findings provide insight into the importance of improving glucose levels which should include lifestyle changes as well as medication," he commented.
Dr Ray added that the findings reinforce the importance of diabetes patients achieving and maintaining "better control of blood sugars long-term".
According to the World Health Organization, approximately half of diabetes patients die from cardiovascular diseases.
