Organisation calls for individual use of intensive blood glucose management for diabetes patients

26 May 2009

Intensive blood glucose management should be implemented on an individual basis for diabetes patients.

This is according to Dr Victoria King, research manager at Diabetes UK, who was responding to a study which revealed that controlling blood sugar levels could markedly reduce the risk of heart problems among people with type-2 diabetes.

Although recommending that intensive blood sugar management should "really be done on an individual basis", Dr King conceded that treatment "isn't great for everyone".

"You can develop hypoglycaemia and have hypoglycaemia episodes by intensively treating your blood glucose levels and that's obviously one of the greatest fears of people with diabetes," she commented.

According to the study's findings, which were published in The Lancet, intensive blood glucose management "significantly reduces" coronary events without an increased risk of death when compared to standard glycaemic control.

It was also revealed, however, that the effects may vary "in differing populations".

According to Diabetes UK, one person is diagnosed with diabetes every three minutes in Britain.
