There is a general lack of awareness when it comes to the different forms of diabetes, type-1 and type-2.
This is according to Sarah Bone, chief executive of UK-based organisation Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation, who was responding to recent research which found a notable rise in the number of people developing type-1 diabetes.
It was revealed in the Lancet that this rise was particularly sharp in younger children, with a 5.4 per cent increase being recorded in the under-five age bracket.
"I still believe there is an awful way to go in terms of awareness raising," she commented.
"I don't think people are aware that potentially they only need to make relatively small lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes."
Findings in the Lancet also showed an overall incidence of type-1 diabetes of 3.9 per cent year-on-year, while 24,400 new cases are expected to be diagnosed among children under the age of 15 in 2020.
Just over 7,000 of these will be under five years-old.
