People are better off following a healthy, balanced diet rather than taking vitamin and mineral supplements.
This is according to Heather Caswell, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, who was speaking after the launch of Ateronon, the so-called 'tomato pill'.
Ateronon, which has been developed by Cambridge Theranostics, is supposed to "revolutionise the approach to hearth health" by preventing the onset of cardiovascular diseases.
"As always, we caution people to wait for any new drug or modified 'natural' product to be clinically proven to offer benefits before taking it," Ms Caswell said.
"It will take some time, and several clinical trials, to provide such evidence for Ateronon."
Ms Caswell added that patients should concentrate on sticking to a Mediterranean diet and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Ateronon is the first formula that has been shown to halt the oxidation of LDL cholesterol - the key process of atherosclerotic build-up, which can occur in patients without raised cholesterol levels.
