People who drink fat-free milk during their breakfast tend to feel fuller at lunchtime, a new study has revealed.
Australian scientists discovered that consuming fat-free milk in the morning helped raise satiety - the feeling of being full.
This led to a reduced calorie intake during the next meal compared to people who drink a fruit drink once they wake up.
It was discovered that those who drank milk consumed 50 fewer calories during their lunch, which represents nine per cent less food.
The findings, which are published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, could be an important development in the fight against obesity.
Researchers have said that satiety may be influenced by milk's protein content, the lactose it contains or the thickness of the drink.
It has been suggested that decreasing calorie intake by as little as 50 a day could have positive long-term consequences in terms of weight management.
Europe currently has the highest number of obese and overweight people in the world, with the figure having tripled over the last 20 years.
