Eczema patients with a heightened risk of viral infections are prone to developing more severe disease, new findings have suggested.
Researchers at National Jewish Health, US, discovered that this patient group was also more likely to suffer from food allergies.
The findings, which are published in the online edition of Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, could help to identify those most at risk for complications stemming from smallpox vaccinations.
Study senior author Donald Leung explained that previous studies have suggested that, as well as eczema becoming increasingly common, patients with the condition are more susceptible to disseminated viral infections.
"Our study is the largest and first in the United States to carefully characterise eczema patients who have suffered widespread herpes simplex viral infections of their skin," he commented.
"It is also the first to report that these patients are more susceptible to staphylococcus and other infections of the skin and eye."
While the causes of eczema are not understood, it is accepted that house dust mites, stress and detergents can all aggravate symptoms.
