Psoriasis patients are at a greater risk of developing other internal diseases than people without the condition.
This is the warning from Dr. Mark Lebwohl, chairman of the department of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Mount Sinai Hospital, US, who told Fox News that psoriasis is "like running your car at maximum".
"You're just going to burn out the engine and other things are going to go wrong."
Dr Lebwohl went on to say that psoriasis can also affect a person's mental and social well-being, while he also highlighted the Koebner phenomenon, which sees the condition develop when an person scratches their skin of have a piece of clothing that rubs against the body.
Psoriasis patients see their skin cells regenerating every two to four days instead of the normal 28 days.
This leads to an excessive build up of cells, which affects the nails and joints as well as a patient's skin.
Approximately 90 per cent of psoriasis cases are categorised as plague psoriasis, although other forms of the disease include guttate psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, pustular psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis.
