Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is "excellent" in terms of both effectiveness and safety.
This is according to a clinical research team in Japan, whose findings are published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology.
While the treatment is effective, scientists said that patients treated with a daily maintenance therapy of PPI should manage their body weight through lifestyle medication such as sticking to a healthy diet and avoiding overeating.
"Lifestyle modification must...remain the backbone of treatment for all patients with GERD, even in the PPI era," they concluded.
Accumulating evidence has suggested that PPI is effective and safe in patients with all grades of GERD, pushing its case as the "mainstay of treatment".
Prior to this study, the possible impact of changes in body weight and body mass index had not been examined.
GERD is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage which occurs by the abnormal reflux in the oesophagus.
