Can testosterone be used to treat cardiovascular disease?

16 Nov 2009

A major study is due to get underway in the US looking at whether testosterone can be used to treat a number of conditions including impaired memory, cardiovascular disease and anaemia.

Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) will be one of centres taking part in the research, which will also determine whether testosterone can boost impaired memory, sexual function, loss of muscle mass and decreased vitality, all of which are caused by low testosterone levels.

Principal investigator for the study at LA BioMed Dr Ronald Swerdloff explained that low testosterone levels are behind a number of health problems in older men.

"We may be able to help older men with low testosterone levels remain healthy and independent longer if we find testosterone to be an effective treatment for health problems associated with low testosterone levels," he explained.

The study, which has been funded by the US National Institute on Ageing, will involve 800 men at 12 different sites across the country, 70 of whom will be based at LA BioMed.

Elsewhere, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania recently discovered that postmenopausal women with higher testosterone levels may be more likely to suffer from heart disease.
