The US is bracing itself for a new generation of diabetes patients following a study by researchers at the University of Chicago.
Findings published in the December edition of Diabetes Care reveal that the number of new diabetes cases in the US will nearly double, up from 23.7 million this year to 44.1 million in 2034.
It is expected that spending on the condition will almost triple during the same period.
Study lead author Professor Elbert Huang warned that the US healthcare system could become "overburdened".
"If we don't change our diet and exercise habits or find new, more effective and less expensive ways to prevent and treat diabetes, we will find ourselves in a lot of trouble as a population," he warned.
The findings come after the publication of a study last year revealed that the number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes in 2007 rose to 19 million, a marked increase from the 1994 figure of ten million.
Diabetes symptoms tend to include a dry mouth and thirstiness, urinating frequently and blurred vision.
