Alternative and Complementary Therapies

People with eczema have tried various alternative and complementary treatments, particularly in recent years. It is important to realise that some of these treatments and therapies have not always had their safety profile and efficacy independently assessed by the relevant authorities. Nevertheless, some people find these therapies helpful in addition to the medicines given to them by their doctor.

Some of the alternative therapies commonly tried:

  • Acupuncture
  • Aromatherapy
  • Chinese herbal medicine
  • Dietary modification
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Homeopathy
  • Relaxation techniques

The National Eczema Society recommends the following guidelines if you are considering using an alternative and complementary therapy:

  • Discuss it with your doctor first as there may be interactions between certain medications. The treatments prescribed by your doctor should not be stopped suddenly, without consulting your doctor.
  • Ensure that the practitioner is properly qualified and registered with the appropriate regulatory body. It has been found that some Chinese eczema creams actually contain topical steroids.
  • Remember that a treatment described as natural or herbal does not necessarily mean without side effects.
