Identifying Meningitis

Meningitis and septicaemia can be difficult to identify initially as the first symptoms are just like many other mild childhood illnesses.  Initial symptoms include, usually fever, vomiting, headache and feeling unwell.

In order to identify meningitis it is important to look for a rash. Many things can cause a rash, such as allergies and viruses, but if the rash does not disappear or fade when under pressure (Tumbler Test), medical help should be requested immediately.

There are vaccines that protect against some forms of meningitis and septicaemia, however,  as there are a number of different types, they can't prevent all the causes of these diseases.

Most people who get meningitis and septicaemia make a full recovery. However, sometimes these diseases can result in a number of either temporary or permanent disabilities.  Therefore if you think you have identified meningitis, then get medical help immediately.
