Expert advises diabetes is threat to all shapes and sizes

04 Dec 2008

People who may consider themselves not obese are still at risk of diabetes and heart disease, according to one expert.

A spokeswoman for the British Heart Foundation (BHF), a group which campaigns to raise awareness of circulatory diseases, said that it was often difficult to tell who may be putting themselves in danger.

Ellen Mason, a cardiac nurse for the BHF, said that body mass index was particularly tricky to judge by looking at a person particularly if they were around the "borderline area" of over 28.

"You can be a normal size but have high levels of fat around your organs, which increases the risk of obesity and diabetes," she said, adding that it was also possible to "carry a few extra pounds and be quite healthy".

Recent research from the BHF looking at the perception of obesity in children found that 56 per cent predict they will live to over the age of 80 - with 11 per cent believing they will top 100 years old.
