What is Psoriasis?

The first thing to know about psoriasis is that you are not alone. Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin condition that affects 1 in 50 of the worlds population, that is over 125 million people world-wide.

Psoriasis develops when the bodys immune system reacts against its own tissues. This triggers the rapid growth and shedding of skin cells. Normally, in healthy skin, cells mature and are shed in roughly a month without you noticing. In psoriasis, this growth and shedding happens much faster, in 3-6 days. This causes skin cells to pile up and form thick, elevated lesions red patches of thick, silvery, scaly inflamed skin.

Psoriasis is considered to be a disease which probably results from genetic factors interacting with environmental factors. It can happen to anyone, at any time of life. The condition has the same likelihood of appearing in people of either sex.

Once psoriasis develops, symptoms may come and go, but the disease itself doesn't go away. While there is no present cure, it can be controlled through proper treatment.
